Levaquin and Other Fluoroquinolones Affect Two Types of Individuals

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently motioned to ‘black box’ Levaquin and other flouroquinolones after pressure from the public mounted due to numerous cases of tendonitis and tendon rupture. It was determined the Levaquin was linked to an increased risk of developing serious injury. To ‘black box’ a medication is to place highly visible warning labels on the packaging to inform the consumer of the potential risks involved with Levaquin intake.

It took public outrage to force the FDA to issue the mandate. The Public Citizen, a consumer watchdog group, had been working for more than two years to ensure that the mandate was released. They are still working diligently in hopes to get more warning labels mandated, even though there is concern that the FDA is taking too long to act which may result in more unwanted, unneeded, and unnecessary injuries.

Experts have identified to the types of individual who are most at risk for developing tendonitis or incurring a tendon rupture. People who are over the age of 60 and those individual who are maintain high physical activity. The elderly are more at risk because they have weaker bones and tendons that have been weather through years of usage. Then when taking Levaquin there is a higher chance that injury might occur. Individuals who are highly active are also at risk because higher stress if placed on the affected areas of the body. In fact, high-activity persons who sustain injury generally have more serious injuries than their elderly counterparts because injury occurs with much more violence.

Luckily, individuals who have sustained injury may be able to seek legal aid.
